 Reduced Brain Size In Kids With Low Birth-Weight Linked To Poor Academic Performance

A new study has found that babies born with very low birth weight result in poor academic achievement in future.   An analysis of recent data from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of 97 adolescents who were part of study begun with very low birth weight babies born in 1982-1986 in a Cleveland neonatal intensive care unit has tied smaller brain volumes to poor academic achievement.  


Government Has No Access to Our Servers: Google

Web giant Google (Larry Page) said that the government has 'no access' to its servers either directly, via back door or through a so-called drop box.   The US-run spy programme Prism, has reportedly been used by GCHQ to obtain personal user data, such as emails, photographs and videos, from Internet companies based outside the UK, reports BBC.

Britain's foreign secretary William Hague has said that law abiding British citizens need not worry about GCHQ surveillance programme which is in collaboration with US agencies.   There have been allegations about GCHQ using 'Prism' spy programme run by US to monitor citizen's web data including emails, photos and videos who are based outside UK, reports BBC.  


New Technique May Help Detect Hidden Earth-like Planets

An international team of exoplanet hunters, including astronomers at the University of Arizona, is developing a new technology that would dramatically improve the odds of discovering planets with conditions suitable for life-such as having liquid water on their surface.   Terrestrial planets orbiting nearby stars often are concealed by vast clouds of dust enveloping the star and its system of planets. Our solar system, too, has a dust cloud, which consists mostly of debris left behind by clashing asteroids and exhaust spewing out of comets when they pass by the Sun.


Apple Accused Of Securing Preferential Terms With Mobile Operators For Iphone

Apple has been accused of using its influence to secure preferential treatment from mobile operators wanting to offer the iphone, a former senior executive at a major European operator has said.   By doing so, Apple squeezed out competition from rival brands.   The Guardian has been given a detailed description of an alleged three-year contract between Apple and the operator.

Google has filed a patent suggesting users pull a series of faces, like sticking out their tongue or wrinkling their nose, in place of a password to unlock their Android phones or tablets.   Google says requiring specific gestures could prevent the existing Face Unlock facility being fooled by photos, reports BBC News.  


Gesture-Recognition Technology Developed Using Wi-Fi Signals

A team, led by a Indian researcher, has developed a system which uses radio waves from Wi-Fi to sense human body movements and detect command gestures from anywhere within a home or office.   University of Washington computer scientists have shown it's possible to leverage Wi-Fi signals around us to detect specific movements without needing sensors on the human body or cameras.

The width of blood vessels in the retina can be a biomarker for brain health, a new study has suggested.   Research shows that younger people who score low on intelligence tests, such as IQ, tend to be at higher risk for poorer health and shorter lifespan, but factors like socioeconomic status and health behaviors don't fully account for the relationship  


Yahoo Set To Introduce Upgraded E-Mail Service

Yahoo users will now have to switch to the search engine's new e-mail service, which is known to be the second or third most popular on the web.   Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer had declared that it was awaiting a major overhaul of the e-mail service in December and progress has been made since then, CNN reports.   Addressing Yahoo users, Mayer said the company has listened to people's claims that they want fewer mail distractions and a quicker process of login and communication.
